## What a vanity metric actually is

Vanity metrics are data points that look impressive or show upward improvements but fail to clearly connect with business outcomes.

To be clear, these metrics are by no means useless, but they are often misused as isolated data points disconnected from the context they require to have value.

## Common examples of vanity metrics

### Total page views

Add context about who is viewing pages, or why pages are being viewed to give this abstract metric more meaning.

### Total visitors

Provide conversion and event data to give this value context around meaningful engagement.

### Session duration

Viewed outside of its relationship to page context or engagement rates this number doesn't say much about the actual experience.

### The temptation of vanity metrics

Vanity metrics are usually the easiest ones to measure—exactly because their lacking much meaningful context.

It's extremely common for these metrics to trend upward without much activity or engagement needed to boost them. Because of this, they feel like clear "wins" and become satisfying to report and share.

## The risk of focusing on vanity metrics

Putting too much emphasis on vanity metrics can create a false sense of progress. Page views and session duration may be increasing and appearing like successful engagement even as conversions and business revenue doesn't change much.

Relying on vanity metrics may lead you to prioritize efforts that reflect in these metrics, but don't impact the actual business outcomes.

## How to identify vanity metrics

Ask yourself if a change in a single metric aligns to a clear business impact. If it doesn't then it's likely a vanity metric unless you additional context. Pair these data points with conversion rates or other engagement indicators to shifts that *are* related to business impacts.

## Turn vanity metrics into actionable metrics

### Total page views

Pair this metric with a conversion rate or bounce rate for a specific page to see how shifts in traffic correlate to shifts in engagement.

### Total visitors

Piar this metric with data on returning visitors or traffic segments to get a better idea of who is actually coming to the website. Connect these numbers to conversions or other engagement rates to see how behavior is impacted.
